The daily planets

The ten planets in the solar system are constantly moving around the zodiac from east to west, each one entering, transiting and then exiting the twelve birth signs in turn.

As they move through the zodiac, the planets form aspects (or angles) to each other and it is the effect and influence of these aspects that provides much of the information from which a horoscope or personality profile is created.

By referring to the tables and aspect descriptions opposite, you will be able to see which aspects are occurring in the next 24 hours and how they are likely to effect you.

When a planet is retrograde

A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac.

It is rather like travelling on the road watching another car beside you, when the other car slows down, or you speed up, it appears as though the other car is moving backwards.

So a planet is never actually moving backwards, it just seems that way, due to this optical illusion.

Retrograde periods, although often problematic, are not particularly uncommon. All planets except for the Sun and Moon, appear retrograde at some time.

Generally, a planet in retrograde predicts a period of seemingly inevitable or fated events, which relates to it’s particular area of influence. They present us with a series of events over which we seem to have little or no control, relating especially to the sign in which the period of retrograde occurs.

When a planet reaches the end of a retrograde cycle it is said to become direct.

The movement of the planets

The Moon is the fastest moving celestial body, completing a full orbit of the zodiac every 28 days, and spending approximately 2½ days in each birth sign.

Neptune however, is one of the slowest, orbiting once every 165 years, and spending approximately 14 years in each birth sign.

So we can see that the Moon will have direct influence over each individual birth sign for a short period every month, whereas Neptune will do so for much longer, but it will occur just once in our lifetime.

The Ascendant or Rising Sign

The ascendant or rising sign is the zodiacal sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of a person’s birth.

The planetary aspects and how they effect us

CONJUNCTION: This aspect occurs when two planets are very close together. Any two planets in conjunction usually work well together. This is a very strong aspect. Keyword: PROMINENCE

SEXTILE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 60º apart. Although this is one of the weaker aspects, just like the Trine it offers positive benefits.

SQUARE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 90º apart.Squares describe internal conflicts and areas of tension and challenge in your life. This is an extremely dynamic aspect. Keyword: OBSTACLES

TRINE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 120º apart.Trines can be the most fortunate aspects as they allow the planet energies to flow and benefits to come your way. Keyword: LUCK

OPPOSITION: This aspect occurs when two planets are directly opposite each other (180º apart)This is a very strong aspect with the two planets working directly in opposition. This conflict can be felt as trauma but it also produces an awareness of both facets of life. Keyword: CONFLICT

SEMISEXTILE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 30º apart. This situation indicates a potential to develop, there is opportunity in the same way as a Sextile, but it is not so available and must be worked for. Keyword: GROWTH

SEMISQUARE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 45º apart. This is a frustration aspect, indicating a difficult time. The planets involved do not work smoothly and produce problems in the area indicated. Keyword: FRICTION

QUINCUNX: This aspect occurs when the planets are 150º apart. This is a stressful aspect as it often produces an imbalance in the two planets concerned, leading to reversals, delays and surprises. It is an indication of an uncomfortable situation or feeling. Keyword: EXPANSION

SESQUIQUADRATE: This aspect occurs when the planets are 135º apart. This indicates a somewhat stressful situation, and rather like the Semi-square, can produce problems and hold-ups. A tricky aspect. Keyword: FRUSTRATION
